This beautiful trail meanders along the sand dunes east of Opotiki and forms a 9.5km link to the bottom of the Motu Trails Motu Road Trail. The Motu Trails Dunes Trail is a reflection of the natural beauty unique to the East Coast - unspoilt views of the Pacific Ocean and the rugged hinterland of the East Cape.

 

Take a picnic or stop at the Tirohanga shop / takeway for an ice-cream / lunch and maybe a swim. Take in all the great views and enjoy a family-oriented experience that will be talked about!

Starting from the stopbanks in the Opotiki township, the Motu Trails Dunes Trail meanders over the Pakowhai ki Otutaopuku bridge and hugs the sand dunes with a number of vantage points to drawl over the views!

 

It’s easy gradient is enjoyed by walkers, runners and cyclists and is a great warm–up for those wanting to tackle the Motu Trails Motu Road Trail.

 

Tracks have been formed around the stopbanks, so you can circumnavigate the town as part of the coastal experience (this also provides a link onto the Motu Trails Pakihi Track back into town).

Parking is available at the Pakowhai Bridge which marks the start of your Motu Trails Dunes Trail experience.
